Dustin Dopirak

DUSTIN DOPIRAK, born and raised in North Huntingdon, covers the Pittsburgh Pirates and Major League Baseball for DKPittsburghSports.com.

Career: Dustin began his professional journalism career in 1999, the summer before his senior year at Norwin High School, working as the Norwin Star sports reporter for Gateway Newspapers. After graduating from Norwin in 2000, he went to Penn State from 2000-2004 and rose to the rank of sports editor at the Daily Collegian, covering the 2002 Penn State football team on the way. During that period, he worked as an intern at both the Tribune Review and Fox Sports Pittsburgh and worked as a stringer for several Tribune Review properties. After graduation, he spent five years at the Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg, Va., where he covered James Madison's men's basketball team as well as preps and local sports in the basketball offseason. He covered Indiana athletics including men's basketball, football and baseball for the Bloomington (Ind.) Herald-Times from 2009-14, then covered Tennessee football and baseball at the Knoxville News Sentinel from 2014-2016. He has earned seven top-10 finishes at the Associated Press Sports Writers writing awards, including a first place in under 30,000 beat writing in 2011 and a first place in breaking news in 2015 for a story he wrote with News Sentinel higher education reporter MJ Slaby.

Personal: Dustin will most likely spend the first few months of his tenure sleeping on the couches of his parents in North Huntingdon and his brother in the South Side. He considers himself a somewhat avid runner, but not avid enough to run a competitive race longer than a 5K. When he isn't covering or watching sports, he's usually either reading about politics or listening to punk rock.
