RIO DE JANEIRO -- Leah Smith of Mt. Lebanon qualified for the 800-meter freestyle in swimming Thursday, finishing fourth in her heat and fourth among all entries at 8:21.43 in the event that's expected to be her last of these Olympics.
Smith, 20, has a bronze in the 400 free and a gold in the 4x200 free relay as of Wednesday night, meaning she could go 3 for 3 in medaling in what might be her strongest discipline.
Katie Ledecky, the precocious 19-year-old from Washington who has dominated the women's bracket with golds in all three of her races, set an Olympic record in this qualifier at 8:12.86, nearly seven seconds faster than anyone else.
More to come.

Leah Smith already has a gold and bronze at these Games. - GETTY
