McSorley ready to take the reins as Penn State’s starting quarterback

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- There was a gap between the two quarterbacks during spring practice, one at the start of camp and, when offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead and coach James Franklin met to give the final evaluation, they settled on Trace McSorley as Penn State's starting quarterback.

"He's been the backup quarterback for two years so we had a lot of opportunities to watch how he prepares and how he handles himself," Franklin said Wednesday evening after practice. McSorley, the Lions' redshirt sophomore backed up Christian Hackenberg last year and turned heads after a strong second half performance in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

"[It was] talking to the strength staff and the players about how they were in the summer when the coaches weren't around," Franklin added. "[It was] how they carried themselves and conducted themselves. It's everything. It's not really one thing. Because the statistics were so close it really ended up being a gut decision. It really wasn't one factor."
