Carter's Classroom: Nickel no longer sub-package taken at Highmark Stadium (Steelers)

Jarvis Jones celebrates a big stop against the Jets - MATT SUNDAY DKPS

Last week, Mark Kaboly wrote a timely piece about how Keith Butler said the 3-4 defense was becoming "obsolete." Passing offenses with formations that include three or more receivers spread across the field are making the 3-4 defense a less practical formation to employ.

Instead of the 3-4, the Steelers have shown more formations with two defensive linemen, four linebackers and five defensive backs. The immediate worry in this situation is that without the use of a nose tackle, the defense might be more susceptible to running plays and less likely to generate pressure.

That might have been a bigger concern in the past with the Steelers, but this season, they have been up to the challenge.
