CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Mario Lemieux's still got it.
Less than an hour after the Penguins' practice Tuesday at the ice rink bearing his name, No. 66 had some fun in a non-contact four-on-four pickup game with former Penguins that included Bryan Trottier and Dave Hannan.
Though Lemieux will not participate in the Penguins' alumni game against the Flyers on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, a few of his fellow skaters on this day will. The game between the former players will celebrate the 50th anniversary of both franchises.
Lemieux, who turned 51 in October, is holding his annual fantasy camp from Feb. 25-March 1. He chose not to skate in the alumni event that will promote the Stadium Series game between the Penguins and Flyers on Feb. 25 at Heinz Field.
By no means was it a laboring pickup game Tuesday, but Lemieux was making crisp passes to set up teammates for scoring chances and scored once himself, lifting a wrister over the shoulder of Jean-Sébastien Aubin. He even celebrated with his signature fist pump.
Others who are set to play in the alumni game but did not skate include Tyler Kennedy, Colby Armstrong, Phil Bourque and Troy Loney.
Our Matt Sunday was at Mike Tomlin's weekly news conference, but I captured visual evidence using my poor photography skills:
