RICHMOND, Va. -- A couple weeks ago, a friend alerted me to the existence of a huge collection of hockey game photos he’d found from the early 1970s. Tons of images from many teams, including the Penguins.
I’ve been going through and having a blast sketching from the photos. Unlike drawing more fantastical subjects, like super-heroes lifting cars or jumping over buildings, hockey action can be a tough thing to illustrate right out of the imagination, at least with any degree of verisimilitude. It’s always a valuable thing to have reference photos on hand so that the motions of the players and relationship of the figures in space looks correct and, well, like hockey ...
One notable thing about the photos was that a few featured the late Penguins phenom Michel Briere. I wrote a story on him for Old-Timey Hockey Tales a while back, and at the time I was stunned at how few photos of the man I could find online … only a couple dozen or so. Anytime anyone ran a story on him, they seemed to use the same few pictures. So, seeing him in these new (at least to me) shots was a real thrill and kind of brought him back from the dead, if only for a few seconds:
In other news, I’ve spent a bit of time this week illustrating our staff here at DKPS. While the stuff’s not ready to see the light of day quite yet, keep your eyes peeled … I think you’re gonna dig it.
