Sketchbook: When hockey was blue and white

RICHMOND, Va. -- A couple weeks ago, a friend alerted me to the existence of a huge collection of hockey game photos he’d found from the early 1970s. Tons of images from many teams, including the Penguins.

I’ve been going through and having a blast sketching from the photos. Unlike drawing more fantastical subjects, like super-heroes lifting cars or jumping over buildings, hockey action can be a tough thing to illustrate right out of the imagination, at least with any degree of verisimilitude.
