Morning Java: DK, Yohe talk Penguins rout of the Panthers

Here are Josh Yohe and I at ice level talking Penguins-Panthers, Sidney Crosby’s insane line, Marc-Andre Fleury’s farewell tour and more, all mixed in with random rude assessments of Derrick Pouliot:

Did anyone else notice on the Root Sports broadcast that immediately after the game ended, the cameras focused on Sidney Crosby shouting something towards the Panthers’ end of the ice? A moment later someone handed him the game puck, and Crosby joined the line waiting to congratulate Fleury. When Sid met Fleury he quietly put the puck into Fleury’s glove and the Fleury was obviously delighted by the gesture. The two players hugged and exchanged smiles. What a class act by Sid to recognize this may have been Fleury’s last shutout as a Penguin. It’s not only something a great leader would do, it’s something a terrific person would do. Sid had just scored a hat trick to retake the league lead in goals and scoring, but his first thought afterwards was to retrieve the game puck for Fleury.

Farewell tour? Horrid sequence… Fleury is still the BEST goalie in pittsburgh

I’ve asked a variation of this online to DK and he suggested I open it up to everyone.

Hey hopefully something you guys go into at some point, but what do you think of the starting goalie situation going into the playoffs? I know it’s a sore subject and I really don’t fall on either side as for me it’s whomever is the best goalie. That said, a lot of what I’ve read, including the comments on the site have been variations of why Fluery is the better choice, specifically since the trade deadline. I get that of course but I think in all honesty that this is now Murray’s team. His play throughout the season has gotten us to this point and while he has played somewhat mediocre over the last span, I got to think you play him up for the playoffs.

What do you think?

I’ve always been a Fleury fan, and conventional wisdom has always held that the hot goalie gets the starts, and Fleury has certainly been hotter the past month. But Murray is obviously the goalie of the future and won the Cup last season. What would it say to your new #1 goaltender if Fleury started the playoffs? How would that affect Murray’s confidence and relationship with the team, especially if Fleury leaves this summer? I think the Pens have no choice (and not a bad one) but to start Murray, and if he struggles, they always have MAF on the bench itching to prove himself to still be a playoff performer.

Lol, Pouliot is (understandably) Josh’s whipping boy
