The passing of Daniel M. Rooney, the Steelers' legendary patriarch, moved the Penguins and their fans to create an unforgettable few sights and sounds Friday night at PPG Paints Arena.
Before the national anthem for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs, public address announcer Ryan Mill asked the crowd for a moment of silence, no small request in the context of a highly-charged atmosphere for the event at hand. But it switched immediately to instant and total silence for the several seconds before Mill's 'We thank you.'
Family and friends of Mr. Rooney will be received on Monday, April 17, from 2-7 p.m. at the PNC Champions Club inside Heinz Field. His life will be celebrated at a Mass of Christian Burial on April 18, at 11 a.m. at Saint Paul Cathedral, 108 North Dithridge Street in Oakland. Memorial contributions may be sent to Duquesne University or the United Way of Southwest Pennsylvania.
