On the day new athletic director Heather Lyke voiced her excitement for Pitt hosting the NCAA Division I wrestling championships at PPG Paints Arena in 2019, Keith Gavin officially took over as head coach of the Panthers' wrestling program.

The announcement of the championship event — one of 22 NCAA regional and championship events Pittsburgh will host between 2019-22 — and the hiring of Gavin have quickly generated a buzz around the program, arriving at an opportune time for a program that has failed to break through despite resting in the country's most advantageous recruiting ground for high school talent.
