Olli Määttä. - MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

Throughout the summer, I'll bridge the gap between glancing back and looking forward by issuing Penguins Progress Reports. See the bottom of this post for descriptions of the stats listed.

Today's subject is Olli Määttä

Basic production: 55 games, one goal, six assists, seven points, 18:04 average TOI, 60.0 Goals For %

There are mitigating factors, of course, but Määttä has come nowhere close to matching the offense he injected during his nine-goal, 20-assist rookie season. His cancer-interrupted second season, a trying year that also included shoulder surgery, was the last time he averaged more than 0.30 points per game.

The 2016-17 regular season was Määttä's least productive from an offensive perspective, with his 0.13 points-per-game average ranking last on the team among players who skated in 15 or more games. The Finnish defenseman will turn just 23 this month, but it's probably time to temper expectations about his ability to push the play forward.
