RICHMOND, Va. -- I’ve been enamored with the story of Roberto Clemente’s 3,000th hit since I first read about it in the first grade.
That it came in his final at-bat of the season, in the final game...it was all just too incredible to believe.
What I didn’t realize until much later, though, was that while it was his last at-bat of the season, the Pirates still had a few games left. Clemente played in the postseason in 1972, as well. Those facts do nothing to tarnish the achievement of a transcendent, once-in-a-lifetime player, of course, but they do somewhat splash the cold water of reality on the tale.
Speaking of the cold water of reality ... while it’s been a heck of a bummer season for the ol’ ballclub, I still plan to check them out one final time in DC this weekend. By all means, sound off if you plan to be in the crowd on Friday night.
Thanks for reading!
