Remember when some were wondering if the Rangers would play nice to facilitate a trade that would have sent Michael Grabner to the Penguins? That was so last Thursday.
Well, grab your socks.
If Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos is to be believed, the Penguins "inquired" about Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh. Inquired is a vague term and could simply be a ploy to drive up the asking price for another contender in the East, Washington or Tampa Bay, presumably.
The star defenseman is owed $4.7 million next season so it would take some creative bookwork to make this deal happen. But certainly he would be a great fit for the Penguins or any team. McDonagh is the best defenseman -- not named Erik Karlsson -- available at the deadline, which will strike in about an hour.
We'll see if it gets done but this report would seem highly, highly doubtful.
