Matt Murray's going to miss some more time.
The Penguins' starting goaltender was diagnosed with a concussion, Mike Sullivan announced Tuesday morning at PPG Paints Arena, and there is no timetable for his return. He was injured during Monday's practice in Cranberry Township after taking an Olli Maatta slap shot to the face mask.
Casey DeSmith, recalled Monday from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL, will start tonight against the Devils. He'll be backed up by Tristan Jarry, who was reassigned to Wilkes-Barre yesterday but only in a paper move. He's on emergency recall.
This is believed to be the second concussion of Murray's NHL career after sustaining a head injury in a collision in April 2016.
Murray has had an unfortunate season, including injuries and personal tragedy. He missed six games in December with a lower body injury and then seven games in early January following the death of his father. Though he's won two Stanley Cups before the age of 23, he's yet to play 50 games in a season.
DeSmith will make his first start since Feb. 3, also against the Devils, when he made 35 saves on 38 shots. He was sent down to Wilkes-Barre following that loss. He is 3-3 with a .926 save percentage and 2.33 goals-against average at the NHL level this season.
Jarry has split back-up duties with DeSmith this season, rotating back and forth from the AHL. At Monday's NHL trade deadline, the Penguins did not acquire a backup as Jim Rutherford said he had faith in the two young goalies.
"We believe in the guys we have," Sullivan said Tuesday. "Both Tristan and Casey are good goalies. They helped us win games when they've been in the lineup. We've had some success with some inexperienced guys."
