Many felt the Steelers erred when they released all-time sack leader James Harrison and kept Daniel McCullers on their roster last December.
Thursday, the Steelers doubled down on the massive nose tackle, re-signing McCullers to a one-year deal.
McCullers, 6-7, 352, was a sixth-round draft pick of the Steelers in 2014. But he's played sparingly, appearing in 42 career games and making 28 tackles while recording 1.5 sacks.
McCullers often drew the ire of former defensive line coach John Mitchell and has largely been a backup throughout his career. But Mitchell has stepped into a different role for the team this season and the Steelers might want to see if new coach Karl Dunbar can have more luck with McCullers, who is one of the biggest Steelers of all time.
The Steelers have shied away from using him extensively, even when they have had injuries at the nose tackle position. He saw just 13 snaps last season, down from a career-high 182 in 2016.
McCullers, who will make the league minimum, won't be guaranteed a roster spot. His one-year contract, much like that of running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, who was signed last week, costs the team little because of roster displacement and makes it easy for the team to release him at any point.
