The Steelers traded Ross Cockrell to the New York Giants at the end of training camp last year after signing Joe Haden to a three-year contract following his release by Cleveland.

Now, it appears the Giants are set to sign another former Steelers cornerback to replace Cockrell, who signed a two-year, $6.8 million free agent deal with the Carolina Panthers two weeks ago. According to former Steelers defensive back Bryant McFadden, who now works for CBS Sports, William Gay will visit the Giants Thursday and is expected to sign with the team if he passes his physical.

Gay, 33, was released along with Mike Mitchell and Robert Golden (who just signed with the Chiefs) prior to the start of free agency to help the Steelers get under the salary cap. The veteran defensive back spent 10 of his 11 NFL seasons with the Steelers, who selected him in the fifth round of the 2007 draft.

Gay played sparingly in 2017 for the Steelers, serving mostly as the team's dime cornerback after Mike Hilton took over as the team's nickel corner. He recorded 19 tackles and one interception, breaking up three passes.
