Let’s Talk: Now discussing Game 4 of Jets-Golden Knights

We’ve been running ‘Let’s Talk Cup’ every morning to offer readers a guide to that day’s NHL action

Introducing a new daily feature!

We’ve been running ‘Let’s Talk Cup’ every morning to offer readers a guide to that day’s NHL action beyond the Penguins, as well as a forum to discuss that in comments. And after a bit of a slow start, it eventually took off to the extent that we thought about making it something more.

So, what we’ll do is put together a schedule on all the major sports we cover, with some basic accompanying info. That’s how it’ll start. And from there, as the day goes along, we’ll add headlines and links to other news around the sports world, albeit from a Pittsburgh perspective.

The onus is on you here! Keep it lively! Contribute your own links to stuff you find around the web!

Iam not enjoying this run one bit! It completely sucks with no Pens… Iam still prideful!
I’m stuck on the Vegas thing,,, there is NO WAY an expansion team should win it all in year 1.
Want to root for MAF so badly, but damn there is something smelly about the advantage given to expansions!

SCOTT M
SCOTT M

There’s no advantage. GMs of other teams were stupid.

PucknutZ

Very entertaining hockey game.
Don’t know if the rooting interest for MAF’s personal 3 peat is a factor…ok..ya it is.
Hate to admit it but I am enjoying watching this cup run almost as much as if the Pens were still in it.
As others have noted it is much more relaxing. Not edge of the seat for 60 min.
Hockey is just such a great game.

Could it possibly be a Flower led VGK team into the Cup finals??? Playing so well. Hoping for a Flower – Kunitz final….with Vegas winning! Flower 2 yrs ago, Cup win but played hardly any games. Flower 1 yr ago, Cup win and played in about half of those games. This year, Flower playing all of the playoff games…Cup??? 😁 🌸🌷💐🌹🌺🌻Only 5 more to go!!!!!

still love maf but i really do not want to see a team that was handed so much talent in their 1st year in the finals

Vegas took advantage of foolish teams, and a hard cap. Nashville couldnt keep James Neal. Florida was so dumb it gifted Marchessault AND Smith to Vegas for pennies on dollar. The Pens had to get rid of a goalie. This team gelled together for a community, and when you know you have a goalie back there who can stop anything, the sky is the limit.

jshephard
jshephard

^this. I don’t follow all 30 teams to know the others situation, but for the Pens at least, this was a salary cap dump. Sure they’d have loved to keep both goalies. They also needed that 5.75 to resign Dumo and Shultz and (we can debate the value of) Sheary. Both teams clearly benefited, to the extent the Pens even punted over a 2nd round pick.

Jenine
Jenine

Handed? I think that completely disregards the brilliance of some of McPhee’s deals and the stupidity of other GMs. No one thought they had “so much talent” until several of them started having career years. Please. It’s no different than a team moving to a new market. I think Denver fans would disagree with you, too. The league couldn’t get the Rockies to stick there back in the day, but their Avs are still there–Cup the first year. And it hasn’t been their only one. This whole “not deserving” narrative is also awful to all of these veteran players. Let it die.

SCOTT M
SCOTT M

There’s no reason to hold anything against Vegas. 30 other GMs were stupid, and Vegas only got what they did because the other GMs were a poor judge of talent or just made dumb decisions.

If I’m the owner of a team like Florida, I’m asking my GM how in the hell he let that kind of talent go.

Florida and Minnesota

Clint Novak

Minnesota at least had the issue of too many young forwards, and something had to give. There is no reason for Florida to have what it did, or for the Capitals to protect Orpik over Schmidt

SCOTT M

I’ll be honest, I’m so torn this year. There are many key members of the Lightning team that came through Norfolk, including Coach Cooper, and they won us a Calder Cup. Then, there’s Flower. I’d love to see Vegas go to the Finals this year, but at the same time I got to know several of the players and Coach Cooper while they were here. My dream Final is Vegas-Tampa.

Bobgoblin
Bobgoblin

Have these playoffs been some of the most open and free wheeling playoff hockey we’ve seen in a while? Or am I just focusing on all the goals?

Washington is having some success w a version of a trap. Yet another reason to hope they don’t make the Final.

The more I watch these 4 remaining teams the more I feel the pens had a lost opportunity
Feel pens could hang with any of these teams— presuming some stouter goaltending of course

I would love Winnipeg to win. Wouldn’t mind TB either, but an expansion team just handed these guys? Eff that.

awilliams1144
awilliams1144

Tampa has already won one, but I could get behind the Jets. That said, a story this remarkable with a major market team I would have to imagine can only help with the viewership of the NHL as a whole. Kinda like when 16 beats a 1 in the NCAA or when Leicester City won the Premier League – two sports I don’t often pay attention to, but the stories of both got me following the sports for at least a while. With the Pens out, I’m interested in entertaining hockey and a healthy league. Some may argue, but I think the Vegas development will help the league more than it will hurt.

SCOTT M
SCOTT M

Incredible. Flower’s theatrics, Vegas’ ability to bounce back. I hate them because I love them.

Jenine
Jenine

I’m a Pens fan, and I always will be, and I love Flower. And I’m loving this team, right now, because it’s like a giant group of underdogs living their best season together. It’s insane and beautiful because of that. May as well have fun with them! (Especially since the Pens are golfing.)

I seriously don’t know/get Vegas bounces back so consistently like this…

Bobgoblin

I figured they could get past LA (, but I really didn’t think they would get past the sharks.

nightsky73144
nightsky73144

Nope, I had them going to the West Final. LA, SJ, and Ducks were not frightening competition, in my mind. Those teams are largely past their sell-by dates.
Now, if they beat the Jets…that would be pretty amazing.

awilliams1144
awilliams1144

With respect to a prior poster on here, I really can’t see how people can see this Vegas teams success as anything other than remarkable. Their starting center to open the season is now back in the KHL as he couldn’t find his game in the league. Pretty much everyone universally panned their draft aside from noting that McPhee did a good job accumulating picks. Even if you go with the logic that 3rd and 4th line players were available from every team, you are left with a team of 3rd and 4th liners, likely challenged to break .500. Did this team have more advantages than some prior expansion teams? Sure. But acting like this isn’t remarkable even under the circumstances seems to miss the mark.

Browns trading Tyrod Taylor QB or Jamar Taylor CB? I’m confused

lizard_kingbb
lizard_kingbb

Two thoughts:
1.) Maybe I’m watching a different series. I get it that we all hate the Craps but they’ve outplayed Tampa for the majority of this series. If 88 does not stand on his head, they are on the verge of elimination today. Without some significant improvement on their part, Tampa will not be moving on. They better get it together.
2.) Love the way Kunitz is responding to the Craps crap. Pens really missed that element in the playoffs this year. GMJR needs to find a feisty 4th line guy that can dish out the physical element when needed AND can play productive 4th line minutes (preferably a veteran).

Slooperman52
Slooperman52

No doubt the Caps have had the better of the play in three of the four games. But it’s not easy to sustain, and they may have played their best game of the series Thursday and still lost. Tampa has far more capacity for improvement.

Was thinking similar thoughts about Kunitz, but if Tampa is still being outplayed, maybe he doesn’t make much difference? I don’t know.

lizard_kingbb
lizard_kingbb

Not sure #2 relates to #1 as far as Tampa’s under-performance Sloop, regardless however think the Pens miss that element. Agree with you that the Craps may not sustain it and Tampa has more to give – they just better find it.

Pittsburgh Petey

You know what they say, it’s not a series until a team wins a game at home…

lizard_kingbb

LOL! Good one Petey!

What is it with the home-ice disadvantage in the NHL playoffs this year? A home team has yet to win a game in the Tampa-Washington series. Pens didn’t do well at home, either.

emoneypitt
emoneypitt

Home ice in hockey is the least advantageous in all of the pro sports, not just this year. In the series between Nashville and Winnipeg, the Jets won 3 of 4 in Nashville and the Preds won 2 of 3 in Winnipeg. And both of those teams were among the best at home in the regular season.

I think what it boils down to is that you’re playing all good teams in the playoffs, and that eliminates the advantage.

rdhoch
rdhoch

According to this chart, home teams overall have a .576 winning percentage. Compare that to the .459 so far this year, and I’d say there is a significant difference this year compared to the average year.

Home teams are 34-40 after last night’s game. Crazy. Wonder if there’s ever been a year when the home teams finished sub .500?

Go VGK. Fleury remains pretty much on fire. Jets are tough, can definitely see that one going 7. Glad to see the Bolts win last night. I get that Ovi is the guy for the Caps but I am so impressed with Kuznetsov’s game, really enjoy watching him play.

This is a great idea DK (and staff)! I heard about the story of the 25 year old playing high school basketball yesterday. So crazy! I can’t believe he was able to pull that off! Has to be turned into a movie 🙂

That one jumped out at me. Completely crazy.

In the main photo for that story, look at the opponent to his left. Someone should check that dude’s birth certificate too. He looks at least as old as the perpetrator.

If the Pens still had Fleury in net they still would be playing and going for the 3-Peat. He has been playing lights out for Vegas and I’m so happy for him !!!!

Both conference finals have been riveting. Please explain to me how in the 2nd period the referee’s go to video review to change the player who is serving the minor tripping penalty?

TheWolf
TheWolf

The refs have the option (rarely used) to consult with the off-ice supervisor of officials in getting a call like this right. In this case, they screwed it up entirely anyway. Total dive by Oshie- he toe-picked and tripped himself- should never have been Caps PP at all. They were in flagrant homer mode last night. Good to see TB overcame.

FreddiePatek

“They were in flagrant homer mode last night.” Very true.

I think this little feature just might work out.
Give people a little time to find it and I think it may become quite popular.

That story about the 25 year old posing as a high school student is insane. How does it slip through the cracks that he poses as a 17 year old freshman that is a hurricane refugee? Or that he dated a 14 year old?

Nowhere else to put this: I LOVE that the individual up and down cup scores have returned. Especially after reading last week or so that you were doing away with cumulative scores that were negative. Maybe I’m weird, but I love seeing the actually voting. It gives me a better sense of the community’s interest level. As I’ve written before, a “0” score without the actual total could mean nobody cared (most of my posts) or it was 100 ups and 100 downs.

PucknutZ
PucknutZ

Agree w/ya jeffrey
Strange though, I gave you an up cup … was 0 0 … clicked up and ya got 2 -1
Maybe just a time lag

gojo

I noticed that too. That has never happened before. But on many of the comments, I would up Cup and it would change by 2.
