RICHMOND, Va. -- I was born in 1971, and unfortunately, I have zero memories of Roberto Clemente as a living person.

When I was a kid, Willie Stargell was the Pirates.

My father never took us to games at Three Rivers. A lifelong northeast Ohioan, he instantly became incensed when trying to navigate Pittsburgh’s bridges and rivers. But he did take me to a meet-and-greet with Pops in my early childhood … I believe it was at a Hills department store. I was very young, and I don’t remember much about it, other than the man standing up from his chair at one point, revealing his entire 6-foot, 3-inch stature. He was literally the biggest human being I had ever seen, as large to my child eyes as his statue on Federal Street appears to me now.
