Bellerive suffered what he called "very severe and painful burns" after attending a bonfire at a former teammate's home in Calgary. According to Canadian police, a substance was placed into the fire pit that caused an explosion, injuring nearby Bellerive, Lethbridge Hurricanes teammate Ryan Vandervlis and former teammate Matt Alfaro.
Bellerive and Alfaro are in stable condition, but Vandervlis is in critical condition and was placed in a medically-induced coma.
The Vandervlis family said that alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
Bellerive has been in direct contact with the Penguins organization since being injured, and the Penguins said that Bellerive “is in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery” in a statement on Sunday.
