The Pirates will be without Corey Dickerson for at least the next three days. Dickerson, the club's starting left fielder, was placed on the family medical emergency list Wednesday and Adam Frazier was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Dickerson must be away from the team for at least three days and no longer than seven days. Frazier, meanwhile, was a late scratch from Triple-A Indianapolis' lineup earlier in the day and had only five hits in 29 at-bats with the Indians. He is en route to Pittsburgh and is expected to be available off the bench in the series finale against the Brewers.
Dickerson, 29, has batted .302/.336/.453 with five home runs and 32 RBIs in 67 games this season. He went 1 for 4 in a 3-2 loss to the Brewers Tuesday night and is mired in a 5-for-29 slump over his last eight games. Sean Rodriguez is starting in left field Wednesday night with Austin Meadows in right field.
A player can be placed on this inactive list as the result of a death or medical emergency in his immediate family (spouse, child, grandchild, parent, grandparent or sibling).
Frazier was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on June 10 when the Pirates had to recall Jacob Stallings as insurance after Francisco Cervelli was struck on the left side of his jaw with a foul ball. It was a surprising move since Frazier started 93 games for the Pirates season. However, Frazier was batting only .237/.318/.356 in 56 games and had only three hits in 19 at-bats as a pinch-hitter.
"It's not so much about progressing," Clint Hurdle said when asked of Frazier's performance with Indianapolis. "It's a guy we know. It's a guy that's played at this level. The hits weren't there. The battle in the box was getting better. He was fielding his position really well. He was showing up, getting reps. We've got right-handed bats. We wanted to add a left-handed bat and another infielder. That's a pretty good fit for those two criteria."
