As we now know, nobody wore No. 7 better for the Penguins than Hall of Famer Joey Mullen.
Though Matt Cullen certainly garnered plenty of votes among the hockey staff at DKPittsburghSports.com in our ongoing "Who Wore it Best?" series.
By re-signing with the Penguins on a one-year, $650,000 contract on Sunday, he now has a chance to add to his legacy in that jersey number.
On Monday, the Penguins announced that Cullen will indeed wear the same No. 7 that he wore in Pittsburgh from 2015-17.
During his two decades in the NHL, Cullen has also worn Nos. 5, 8, 16, 17 and 45 in stops with the Ducks, Panthers, Hurricanes, Rangers, Senators and Wild. Beginning with the 2009-10 season with Ottawa, he's worn No. 7 continuously.
The Penguins also announced that Jack Johnson will wear No. 73.
So, uh, who wore No. 73 best? He will be the first.
Johnson was signed to a five-year, $16.25 million contract during the first day of free agency on Sunday. Seventy-three is a combination of the numbers he's worn previously in his career. He wore No. 7 for the Blue Jackets in a non-winning culture since 2011. Prior to that he wore No. 3 for the Kings from 2007-12, though he did wear No. 33 for the first five games of his career at the end of the 2006-07 season.
