The Steelers and Le'Veon Bell were not the only ones who failed to come to terms on a long-term contract extension before Monday's deadline for franchise-tagged players.
Bell joins Detroit defensive end Ziggy Ansah, Dallas defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence and Los Angeles Rams safety Lamarcus Joyner, who will play on their team's respective tags.
Ansah, 29, will earn $17.1 million this season and is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent next offseason. The fifth overall pick in 2013 made the Pro Bowl two years later but has missed five games over the past two seasons with various injuries. He had 12 sacks last season to go along with 39 tackles.
Lawrence, 26, will also earn $17.1 million, the average of the top five salaries at the position. He recorded 14.5 sacks and 58 total tackles last season while making his first Pro Bowl. Lawrence had stated publicly that he is OK with being tagged. He's also had back injuries that required surgeries in 2016 and 2017.
Joyner, 27, a fifth-year pro, will play for about $11.3 million, a $9.7 million increase over the $1.6 million he made last season in the final year of his rookie contract. The 2014 second-round pick enjoyed a breakout season last year, intercepting three passes while returning one for a touchdown.
