Steelers' roster looks same with key exceptions taken at Rooney Complex (Steelers)

Steelers quarterback Josh Dobbs (5) scrambles against Carolina in the preseason. - MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

The Steelers' 53-man roster is set -- at least for now. Look for some coming moves once the waiver period ends later today.

We'll update what the roster looks like as it continues to evolve and even add the practice squad additions here, as well.

Of course the big news thus far was the release of Landry Jones. There could be other surprising moves coming. But overall, just 11 players who weren't with the team at some point last season made it.

Let's take a look at the roster as it takes shape.

Quarterback (3): Ben Roethlisberger, Josh Dobbs, Mason Rudolph

The Steelers are going young at the position behind Roethlisberger. The hope, obviously, is that Roethlisberger will stay healthy. But the Steelers were pleased with the progression of Rudolph, their third-round pick.

Running back (5): *Le'Veon Bell, James Conner, Jaylen Samuels, Stevan Ridley, Roosevelt Nix

Bell doesn't count against the roster until he shows up and signs his franchise tag offer. When that happens, the Steelers could ask the league for a roster exemption. In the meantime, Conner and Ridley would carry the rushing load. Nix is one of the league's best fullbacks.

Wide receiver (6): Antonio Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington, Justin Hunter, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Ryan Switzer

Washington, a second-round draft pick, suffered an abdominal injury in the third preseason game against Tennessee. Brown didn't play at all in the preseason after dealing with a quad injury early in training camp. Smith-Schuster was limited off and on throughout the process with a knee issue. But the Steelers obviously feel good about this position. Switzer was acquired last week to get Brown and Smith-Schuster off punt and kickoff returns, respectively.

Tight end (3): Vance McDonald, Jesse James, Xavier Grimble

McDonald hasn't practiced since July 29 because of a foot injury. Grimble is dealing with the aftereffects of surgery three weeks ago to repair a torn ligament in his thumb. McDonald told me a few weeks ago he is shooting for a return at the start of the regular season. But don't be surprised if the Steelers make a roster move here. Grimble could go to IR and possibly return at some point. The Steelers could bring back Bucky Hodges or sign a veteran from elsewhere. Nick O'Leary (Buffalo), Will Tye (Patriots), Clive Walford (Jets) and Gavin Escobar (Miami) are some veteran tight ends released Saturday who could be of interest.

Offensive line (9): Alejandro Villanueva, Ramon Foster, Maurkice Pouncey, David DeCastro, Marcus Gilbert, B.J. Finney, Matt Feiler, Chuks Okorafor, Zach Banner

Banner, signed during training camp, is the surprising guy here. But this went pretty much as expected.

Defensive line (6): Cameron Heyward, Javon Hargrave, Stephon Tuitt, Tyson Alualu, Dan McCullers, L.T. Walton

This went as expected, as well. But there were some interesting defensive tackles let go Saturday around the league, nose tackle Austin Johnson by Tennessee, for example. He could be brought in to replace McCullers.

Linebacker (9): T.J. Watt, Bud Dupree, Vince Williams, Jon Bostic, Anthony Chickillo, Tyler Matakevich, L.J. Fort, Ola Adeniyi, Matthew Thomas

Two undrafted rookies in Adeniyi and Thomas make it. They've got plenty of upside potential. Watt missed the entire preseason but returned to practice last week and should be ready to go against Cleveland.

Secondary (10): Joe Haden, Artie Burns, Mike Hilton, Morgan Burnett, Sean Davis, Terrell Edmunds, Cam Sutton, Coty Sensabaugh, Marcus Allen, Jordan Dangerfield

There could be a move coming here later today. Stay tuned. Nat Berhe, released Saturday, suggested on Twitter that he will be brought back after an IR move is made. Burnett has missed the past three weeks of practice. Some in the organization think Edmunds, the team's top draft pick, is the team's best safety right now, anyway.

Specialist (3): Chris Boswell, Jordan Berry, Kameron Canaday

This doesn't change at all from a year ago, though Berry held off a strong challenge from Matt Wile, who was claimed by the Vikings, to keep the punting job.

Practice Squad: CB Brian Allen, LB Farrington Huguenin, LB Keion Adams, WR, Trey Griffey, WR Tevin Jones, DL Lavon Hooks, TE Bucky Hodges, RB Jarvion Franklin, C Patrick Morris, OT R.J. Prince

All 10 are back with the team after spending camp with it. No real surprises here. Jones and Griffey beat out Damoun Patterson, who was waived/injured. Hodges could wind up on the active roster against Cleveland. We'll see.
