The Pirates made no surprise moves Tuesday night in setting their 40-man roster.
Rookie right-hander Tanner Anderson was traded to the Athletics for a player to be named or cash, and four prospects were added to the roster. The 25-year-old Anderson made his major league debut with the Pirates this year, pitching in relief six times and going 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA and 2.02 WHIP.
Placed on the 40-man were right-handers JT Brubaker and Mitch Keller, shortstop Cole Tucker and outfielder Jason Martin. The moves prevent those players from being eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 13 at the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas.
The Pirates selected Brubaker as their Minor League Pitcher of Year in 2018 after going a combined 10-6 with a 2.81 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 28 starts with Triple-A Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona. In 154 innings, the 24-year-old struck out 131.
Brubaker was the Pirates' sixth-round draft pick in 2015 from the University of Akron.
Keller, 22, was a combined 12-4 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 25 starts this year with Indianapolis, Altoona and Class A Bradenton, striking out 135 in 142 1/3 innings. Baseball America ranked him as the 11th-best prospect in the International League and No. 6 in the Eastern League.
Keller was the Pirates' second-round draft pick in 2014 from Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The 22-year-old Tucker, who was the Pirates' first-round selection in 2014 from Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix, hit .259/.333/.356 in 133 games with five home runs for Altoona, while stealing 36 bases in 48 attempts. He also committed just 14 errors.
Tucker then played in the Arizona Fall League with Surprise and had a .370/.442/.457 line and six stolen bases in 20 games.
Martin was one of four players acquired from the Astros in January in the Gerrit Cole trade. The 23-year-old batted a combined .274/.337/.429 with 13 home runs in 127 games with Indianapolis and Altoona, but was just 12 of 24 on stolen base attempts.
The 40-man roster consists of 23 pitchers, three catchers, nine infielders and five outfielders.
