Chris Archer underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a bi-lateral hernia, but the Pirates expect him to be fully recovered for the beginning of spring training.

Archer felt pain in his abdomen during a recent workout. He received opinions from multiple doctors before deciding on having the operation, which was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia.

The typical recovery from the surgery takes six weeks. Thus, Archer should be able to be a full participant in spring training.

The Pirates acquired Archer from the Rays on July 31 in a trade for Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows and pitching prospect Shane Baz. Archer, a two-time All-Star, then went 3-3 with a 4.30 ERA in 10 starts.
