Letang exits with apparent lower-body injury taken at PPG Paints Arena (Penguins)

Kris Letang. -- MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

Kris Letang left the ice with five minutes remaining in the Penguins' 5-3 win over Boston with an apparent lower-body injury.

Letang collided with Boston's Joakim Nordstrom after a pass and fell awkwardly to the ice:

Letang remained crumpled on the ice for a few seconds, then stumbled again as he was attempting to stand up. He was visibly in pain upon standing, and hobbled off the ice with a heavy limp.

Mike Sullivan did not have an update on Letang's status following the game, but he expressed confidence in the Penguins' two scratched defensemen, Chad Ruhwedel and Juuso Riikola, if Letang does miss any time.

"We think we have NHL defensemen," said Sullivan. "Juuso has played extremely well. Chad is an NHL defenseman. He's played for our team for a few years. He's played in the playoffs. He's won Stanley Cups with us. These guys are NHL defensemen. Regardless of who is in our lineup, we believe we have enough to win."

Letang was the Penguins' only right-handed defenseman in the lineup, which means they would likely turn to another right-handed defenseman in his absence. Ruhwedel is right-handed, Riikola is not. If the Penguins choose to recall a defenseman from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, pickings are slim. The only healthy right-handed defenseman there is Ethan Prow.
