Neil Walker is headed south.
Tuesday, the Marlins signed Walker to a one-year contract worth $2 million, marking his fourth team in five years. According to sources close to the situation, the Marlins plan to use Walker at first, second and third base, as well as in left and right field as needed.
Since being traded from the Pirates in December 2015, Walker has played for the Mets, Brewers, Yankees and now the Marlins. In 113 games last season for the Yankees, Walker slashed .219/.309/.354 with 11 home runs and 46 RBIs, largely because of a disastrous start.
Walker won the Silver Slugger award in 2014, becoming the first Pirates second baseman to do so since Johnny Ray in 1983. In that season, Walker posted a .271 batting average with 23 home runs and 76 RBIs. Those 23 home runs marked a career high, a total he tied in 2016 as a member of the Mets.
