DUNEDIN, Fla. -- The Pirates claimed right-handed reliever Jake Barrett off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.
The move was announced Friday during the Pirates' split-squad exhibition game against the Blue Jays.
Barrett pitched for the Diamondbacks in each of the last three seasons, going 2-4 with four saves, a 4.05 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP in 103 games. The Giants purchased Barrett from Arizona on Feb. 5, then designated him for assignment earlier this week.
The 27-year-old was the Diamondbacks’ third-round draft pick in 2012 from Arizona State. Plagued by shoulder problems in recent years, Barrett’s fastball sits in the 94-96 mph range and he also throws a hard slider.
Chad Kuhl was placed on the 60-day disabled list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Barrett. Kuhl is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire season.
