CINCINNATI -- The Pirates' 25-man roster is set, and it won't include Lonnie Chisenhall until May or so.
Chisenhall, struck on the right hand by a pitch Monday night in Houston, was diagnosed with a broken right index finger and is expected to miss four to six weeks. He's been placed on Major League Baseball's injury list.
Veteran Melky Cabrera will start in right field for Thursday's opener against the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Clint Hurdle said Pablo Reyes and J.B. Shuck could also help fill the void while Chisenhall is out.
Predictably, Jordan Lyles also was placed on the injury list with what the team is calling right side discomfort. In reality, it's hoped that he can be stretched out to six innings and/or 100 pitches to become the fifth starter, which he couldn't do in spring training.
Because of these two placements, the Pirates officially selected the contracts of Cabrera, as well as Shuck and Francisco Liriano. Also, Steven Brault will pitch from the pen while Lyles gets stretched out.
Here's the full 25-man roster for today's 4:10 p.m. opener against the Reds:
The remaining formalities: Placed on the 10-day IL were Gregory Polanco (shoulder), Elias Diaz (virus), Dovydas Neverauskas (left oblique strain) and Jose Osuna (lower neck discomfort). And to clear three spaces on the 40-man roster for the selected contracts, Edgar Santana (elbow) was placed on the 60-day IL, and Jake Barrett and Aaron Slegers were designated for assignment.
