Live Qs at 5: John’s answers on the Pirates

Beat writer John Perrotto answers readers’ questions about the Pirates and baseball in general.

JOHN PERROTTO - DALI KOVACEVIC / DKPS

CINCINNATI — The Pirates have one game in the books after opening the season Thursday against the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Following an off day today, the Pirates and Reds are back at it tomorrow afternoon. So with a day to catch our breath, what better time for you to fire questions my way and me try to give you cogent answers than right now?

If you’re new, here’s how this works: Enter one question in the comments below. I’ll go through and answer as many as possible. When it’s done, all that will be left are the Qs that were used, my replies and any follow-ups by the original questioner. Please don’t use this the way you would an ordinary commenting thread.

Hello John. I asked this prematurely a while back. Who surprised you making the roster? Who surprised you by being sent back down to AAA?
Looking forward to this season!

John, while a broken hand and a migraine are unexpected, I think it shows the lack of depth on this team, considering who had to play 2/3 of the outfield yesterday. What are your thoughts on the reserves this year as compared to years past?

John,
Was gonna ask a Bell question but that has been done pretty well above. Do you see Cutch having a big year in Philly this year? After PNC Park and San Fran, seems like he may enjoy playing in a park that is a little more friendly to RH hitters.

If the Pirates had last year’s budget, what you have done with the extra $15 million?

John , where do you rate the Pirates pitching staff in MLB ? I’d say average which would be put them around 15 th. This is why I do not understand all the talk about how this staff is one of the best.
I see three average or slightly above average pictures , one unproven (Musgrove) and one lousy ( Jordan Lyles ) . Why all the talk of one of the best staffs in the league ?

Is AJ Schugel done? He was extremely effective before his shoulder issue and haven’t heard anything since the middle of last year.
