Erik Gonzlaez and Starling Marte collide – MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

Pirates head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk met with reporters today at PNC Park — and he brought plenty of information to the table.

Here is what he had for us:

• Nick Burdi, right biceps/elbow: "Nothing new to report. He did undergo diagnostic tests here in Pittsburgh and we are in the process of setting up a second opinion with Dr. Miester for early next week."

• Corey Dickerson, shoulder: "He continues to work through his flat-ground portion of throwing. He continues to hit without any reservations. He's going through the work day-to-day, so we'll have more information at the end of the day and how Corey came out of that."

Per Tomczyk, Dickerson is "getting closer" to a rehab assignment.

• Starling Marte, abdominal wall contusion/bruised right quad: "He has resumed light baseball activities. He is progressing well. We are still optimistic that it could be the minimal time down with Starling — very encouraging news at this time."

Could Marte see time in a rehab assignment?

"That's still too early to be determined. A lot of things go into those rehab assignments."

• Edgar Santana and Chad Kuhl, Tommy John surgery, continue to "work diligently" through the flat-ground portion of their throwing program.

• Erik Gonzalez, fractured clavicle, is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning (Thursday) at Allegheny Health Network. The surgery is scheduled "to repair and internally fixate the fracture." Tomczyk noted that an "appropriate timeline" will be addressed after surgery.

• Jacob Stallings, cervical neck strain, has resumed light baseball activities.

• Bryan Reynolds is still being assessed for today's availability against the Diamondbacks with left quad discomfort.

• Lonnie Chisenhall, broken right hand, continues his rehab assignment with Indianapolis, going 1-for 11 in his first three games. He is scheduled for his next game and has "responded well." Tomczyk said he is "making progress."

• Kevin Newman, lacerated right ring finger, played in the outfield last night in Indianapolis and is scheduled to play again this evening. "If he continues to make progress, they'll put him back at shortstop later this week."

• Jose Osuna, neck discomfort, began a rehab assignment with the Bradenton Marauders and has appeared in one game. He has "responded well" and will continue to be moved around the four corners to assess his progress.
