Chris Archer - MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

PHOENIX -- Welcome back, Chris Archer.

Wednesday, the Pirates reinstated Archer to the 25-man active roster from the 10-day injured list. Archer was placed on the 10-day IL on April 28 with right thumb irritation.

To make room for Archer's return, the Pirates have optioned Clay Holmes to Triple-A Indianapolis.

The move is no surprise, as Archer is expected to start Wednesday in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks' Zack Greinke.

While Archer was on the IL, the Pirates were forced into tough decisions. Along with Archer, No. 1 starter Jameson Taillon suffered a right elbow injury and was recently placed on the 60-day IL. Down two starters, the Pirates used a rotation involving Nick Kingham and Steven Brault, an experiment that yielded poor results. Brault allowed eight runs and 11 hits in 7 2/3 innings, while Kingham gave up nine runs and 13 hits in eight innings.

Archer's return solves one problem for the team, but it remains unclear who will fill the fifth starting position. I have more analysis on that conundrum and how it relates to Saturday's tilt vs. the Padres right here.

In five starts this season, Archer is 1-2 with a 4.33 ERA and a 1.296 WHIP.

Holmes made two relief appearances for the Pirates after being called up, allowing four runs (three earned) in four innings for a 6.75 ERA.
