The first reason Clint Hurdle gave for choosing Michael Feliz to be the opener for Friday night’s game with the Dodgers at PNC Park wasn’t encouraging.
“Who’s eliminated,” Hurdle said before also adding that he also likes Feliz’s “swing and miss” ability as well as how he has performed against left-handed hitters.
However, the first reason shows the desperate situation the Pirates are in with their starting rotation as Jameson Taillon and Trevor Williams are on the injured list.
Friday marks the third time in six games the Pirates have used an opener. Montana DuRapau served in that role last Saturday against the Padres at San Diego and again Wednesday versus the Rockies at PNC Park.
Feliz has made 11 relief appearances for the Pirates this season and is 2-0 with a 4.63 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings.
Steven Brault is expected to follow Feliz to the mound, the same as he did DuRapau last Saturday.
