Richard Rodriguez. - MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Well, this maybe explains things a bit better.

The Pirates placed Richard Rodriguez, who'd been pretty much immaculate in relief for two months before a rough appearance over the weekend in St. Louis, on Major League Baseball's 10-day injury list because of right shoulder inflammation.

The corresponding move was the expected activation of Mitch Keller, the starter here Monday night against the Angels.

Rodriguez hadn't been scored upon in 29 of 31 appearances before Friday night, when the Cardinals stunningly tagged him for four runs, including the first home run he'd allowed since May 30. He then was deemed unavailable by the athletic trainers over the weekend, when he was bypassed in situations where he typically might have been summoned.

Kyle Crick and Michael Feliz also will be unavailable tonight, Clint Hurdle told me Monday afternoon, because of heavy usage of late. That might mean something, given that rookie Mitch Keller is starting. If Keller doesn't last long, it'll be up to Chris Stratton and Clay Holmes to pick up middle innings.
