Capitals’ Hathaway spits on Gudbranson, gets match penalty

A scrum in the game between the Ducks and Capitals in Washington got a little out of hand, and two former Penguins were involved.

Capitals forward Brendan Leipsic leveled former Penguin Derek Grant behind the Ducks' net. Seconds later, forward Chandler Stephenson scored for the Capitals, and a little brawl breaks out:

Grant and Capitals forward Garnet Hathaway wrestled each other to the ground:

As the officials were trying to separate everyone, Hathaway comes back for more and former Penguin Erik Gudbranson steps in:

... and Hathaway responds by spitting in his face:

... after which Tom Wilson is shown on the NBC Sports Washington broadcast enjoying the scene:

Gudbranson, taking exception to Hathaway spitting right in his face, tries to go after Hathaway again but officials keep everyone separated and everything is broken up:

Hathaway was given a match penalty for his actions.

“Yeah, it has no place," Hathaway told reporters after the game. "It was an emotional play by me. You don’t plan any of that stuff in your head and it was a quick reaction and unfortunately the wrong one for me to a sucker punch.”
