The Penguins have recalled Anthony Angello on an emergency basis, Jim Rutherford announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency recalls only happen when a team does not have enough players to dress 12 forwards, six defensemen, and two goaltenders. Angello's recall means that the Penguins didn't have 12 healthy forwards without him.
It's not clear why.
The Penguins had 12 forwards at practice on Monday and used these combinations:
Jason Zucker — Sidney Crosby — Conor Sheary
Nick Bjugstad — Evgeni Malkin — Bryan Rust
Evan Rodrigues — Jared McCann — Patric Hornqvist
Brandon Tanev — Teddy Blueger — Sam Lafferty
Nick Bjugstad has already been ruled out for today's game. Patrick Marleau didn't practice because he stayed in San Jose an extra day and was traveling to Pittsburgh with his family on Monday, which would have him in Pittsburgh in time for the game.
This has nothing to do with Dominik Simon's upper-body injury suffered on Saturday, because the 11 forwards above (not counting Bjugstad) and including Marleau would still have given them 12 healthy forwards.
All of the forwards in the above combinations were full participants and stayed on the ice until the end of practice.
Brandon Tanev did take a spill during practice and crashed into the boards and appeared to hit his head. He stayed down on the ice for several seconds then went to the bench, but his entire line was also on the bench at that time because their run in the drill was over. He didn't miss a shift and was back on the ice for his line's next rush and finished practice. He was off the ice and out of the locker room by the time we were in there, but that isn't all that unusual.
UPDATE: Mike Sullivan said at 5 p.m. that Tanev is "ill" and will miss tonight's game.
After the trade deadline teams are allotted four standard recalls for the remainder of the regular season. Emergency recalls do not count toward that total. The Penguins have still used two of their four standard recalls, with the first two being used on Zach Trotman's paper transaction and Sam Lafferty.
