The city of Toronto has canceled all permits for major events through June 30 due to the coronavirus outbreak, Toronto mayor John Tory announced on Tuesday.
Tory's office later clarified in an email to SiriusXM NHL's David Pagnotta that the ban does not currently affect sporting events, only city-permitted events like festivals and parades. The most notable cancelation is Toronto's Pride festival, which is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
"Sporting events don’t require permits, but the mass gathering order was issued by the province and they would need to address that aspect," Tory's office told Pagnotta.
Ontario banned gatherings of more than five people on March 28.
Toronto is home to teams in the NHL (Leafs), NBA (Raptors), MLS (Toronto FC), AHL (Marlies), and NLL (Rock), all leagues that remain paused in the midst of their seasons. Toronto is also home to teams in the MLB (Blue Jays) and CFL (Argonauts), leagues that have yet to begin their seasons.
