Colts signing former Steelers fullback Nix taken on the North Shore (Steelers)

Former Steelers running back Roosevelt Nix (45) -- MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

Roosevelt Nix, released by the Steelers last month, will be signing with the Colts on a one-year deal, according to ESPN.com.

Nix was released by the Steelers two days after the team agreed to terms with fullback Derek Watt on a three-year contract.

A Pro Bowl player in 2017, Nix missed all but three games in 2019 with a nagging knee injury. His signing with the Colts will become official once he passes a physical.

A former undrafted player out of Kent State, Nix was an all-conference nose tackle who transitioned to fullback in training camp in 2014. He was released by Atlanta at the end of training camp that year and spent a season playing in the Arena Football League before being signed by the Steelers in 2015.

Nix would go on to win a spot on the team's roster, becoming a special teams ace and the team's starting fullback. He finished his career with the team with 12 catches for 69 yards and a touchdown and four carries for four yards and a score.

But the Steelers wanted a player who would be more of a weapon at the position, and there was some concern with the knee issue that limited the 28-year-old to three games last season.

Since Nix was released by the Steelers, his signing by the Colts will not count into Pittsburgh's compensatory pick formula. Currently, the Steelers are expected to get a fourth-round pick and two sixth-round selections based on their losses in free agency when those picks are announced next spring.
