NHL shares details on bubble, broadcast plans taken in Cranberry, Pa. (Penguins)

CRANBERRY, Pa. -- The NHL on Friday provided some details on what life will be like inside the Toronto and Edmonton bubbles for the 24 teams playing this summer, as well as broadcast plans and other initiatives for the playoffs.

The secure area in the Toronto bubble in which the Penguins will be staying includes the Maple Leafs' Scotiabank Arena and the surrounding area, the two hotels and the area around them, and BMO Field, home to the CFL's Toronto Argonauts and MLS' Toronto FC:

The secure zone in the Edmonton bubble include the Oilers' Rogers Place, three hotels, and the plaza near the arena:

There will be "common areas" in certain areas of the bubble where players from different teams where will be able to mingle with players from different teams. NHL's chief content officer Steve Mayer said in Friday's press conference, though, that he doesn't believe players will actually want to spend time with players from other teams during the playoffs anyway.

"For the first five days we’ve put a very, very stringent tone for the fact that they have to be separated, both in restaurants and everywhere," said Mayer. "But we really have felt that the players’ feedback is their interest to be separated throughout, and we’ll see how that evolves as the tournament moves on."

Mayer said that Rogers Arena is good to go after suffering some flood damage last week.

"So we had a bit of a scare for sure, but there are no issues at all," he said. "Everything has been repaired. The control room that had some significant damage has -- all the equipment that was damaged has been replaced. We’ve turned on the ribbon boards, the scoreboards. All of our data, all back to normal, no problems at all. And the crew here in Edmonton, Oilers Entertainment Group, has done a magnificent job in getting us back up and running, and there are no issues at all."

Even though the Leafs and Oilers will be playing in their home arenas, they won't necessarily be using their home locker rooms. Each arena has multiple locker rooms with teams rotating through the different rooms, given that each arena will host three games per day.

"With teams moving in and out and games on different days, it really is dependent on the schedule and where the teams are and where they’re coming from for movements is what is decided," said senior VP of hockey operations, Kris King.

SOCIAL CAUSES

The primetime games in each hub city on Day 1 -- the Penguins-Canadiens opener and the Blackhawks-Oilers opener -- will have pregame celebrating frontline workers of the pandemic and advocate for social causes like Black Lives Matter.

BROADCASTS

Michael Buble will be the virtual anthem singer for the opening night games in both Toronto and Edmonton.

Mayer spoke at length about the plans for the broadcast, and how the lack of fans may make the camera situation better.

"There are no fans, and many times the considerations of where cameras go in arenas are based on where our fans are. We don’t want to block our fans from the viewing experience. We have no fans here, so we are able to walk around an arena like this and find the perfect, most ideal positions for every single one of our cameras.

"You know, it is our goal to be able to show a hockey game in a manner that shows off the speed and you feel like you’re part of the game, that you’re watching with the energy that sometimes doesn’t come -- yes, it comes from the fans, but sometimes it doesn’t come from the play on the ice.

"We’ve all heard that our game -- we all want it to translate better for television. We think that in this tournament we’re going to be able to accomplish that even greater because of the way we can bring our fans right inside the game, down low, show the speed, hear the sounds, and then the energy of the set design and some of the things that we’re planning on doing will make it visually exciting, as well."

Gary Bettman added that there will be "about a dozen more cameras" than they typically use for a national broadcast.
