As it turns out, you can go back again.
The Steelers initially wanted to keep Sean Davis as an experienced backup at safety. But the veteran safety wanted an opportunity to win a starting job elsewhere, signing with Washington in the offseason.
And quarterback Josh Dobbs made the team's initial 53-man roster a year ago before being traded one week into the season to the Jaguars for a fifth-round draft pick.
Both players, who were on the team's roster to open the 2019 season, are back with the Steelers again this year after the team brought both back following their release by Washington and Jacksonville. The Steelers released quarterback Devlin Hodges and safety Curtis Riley to make room on the roster for Dobbs and Davis. The team would like both Hodges and Riley on its practice squad.
Davis, a 2017 second-round draft pick of the Steelers, appeared in 48 games, making 41 starts. He was scheduled to be the team's starting free safety in 2019, but struggled through injuries in training camp and missed the regular season opener at New England.
He returned the following week but suffered a torn labrum in a Week 2 loss against the Seahawks that ended his season.
Davis, 26, signed a one-year deal with Washington in the offseason that included a $2 million signing bonus. But he was released Saturday as teams around the league cut their rosters to 53 players.
Davis has five career interceptions and 2.5 sacks, all with the Steelers.
Dobbs, a fourth-round pick in 2017, initially made the Steelers' roster coming out of training camp last season as the team's No. 3 quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph. He had served as Roethlisberger's primary backup in 2018.
But the Steelers traded him to the Jaguars last Sept. 9, less than a week before Roethlisberger was lost for the season to torn ligaments in his throwing elbow. That opened up a roster spot for Hodges, who wound up starting six games last season.
Dobbs has appeared in five career games, completing 6 of 12 passes for 43 yards and running for 11 yards on four carries.
Riley was signed by the team last month to help improve its safety depth.
