KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Pirates and Royals had their game at Kauffman Stadium delayed by half an hour Saturday because there was a shooter at Arrowhead Stadium, which is across the lot from the ballpark.

Kansas City news outlets reported that the standoff began around noon. At 6:20 p.m. CT, members of the media at Kauffman Stadium were informed the suspect was in custody. No shots were fired in the resolution.

The Pirates were forced to stay in their downtown hotel for most of the standoff, but left via bus around 4:15 p.m. CT. They arrived at the park around 4:40.

First pitch was at 6:35 rather than the originally scheduled 6:05.

No members of the Pirates were at the facility Saturday at the time of the active shooter.

However, getting to the park later meant the Pirates were unable to hold outdoor batting practice, something they were not able to do Friday because of pregame rain or will be able to do Sunday because it is an afternoon game. Instead, they had an abbreviated batting practice in the indoor cages.

Derek Shelton said the Pirates tried to push the start time back further so they could take batting practice, but their request was denied.

This has been yet another way the Pirates have had games delayed or postponed this season, including because of the pandemic, weather and a drone delay in Minnesota.

"Every day we have to be prepared for something to be different," Shelton said. "That’s what today is. Our guys adapted and adjusted. We’re doing it with what time we get to the ballpark, the game time, the whole thing. Just continue to adapt and adjust and move forward.”
