Thee QMJHL's opening weekend was a disaster when it came to preventing the spread of coronavirus.
On Monday, the league announced that one player on the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada tested positive, the first positive case in the league. After the player tested positive, the Armada paused all team activities, isolated its players, and tested them. Their opponent for the first two games of the season, the Sherbrooke Phoenix, did the same.
Penguins top forward prospect Samuel Poulin is Sherbrooke's captain.
On Wednesday, the QMJHL announced that the number of positive cases on the Armada had grown to 18, a number that included both players and staff.
The outbreak spread to their opponent Sherbrooke, too. The league announced that eight players and staff of the Phoenix tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday.
The mandatory isolation period for players and staff on both teams is 14 days. In-person team activities remain suspended, and the QMJHL is adjusting the league schedule as a result. Sherbrooke's next four games (Oct. 8, 9, 16, and 17) are postponed until further notice.
Poulin, 19, scored two goals and an assist in his team's two games against the Armada.
