With core special teams players Derek Watt and Marcus Allen both already declared out for the Steelers' game Sunday at Heinz Field against the Eagles, the team needed some help on that unit.
Saturday, the team elevated running back Trey Edmunds from the practice squad just for that purpose.
It will mark the first time this season the Steelers have used the new rule this season that allows teams to have up to 55 players active on game day. Edmunds can be active for Sunday's game and then go back to the practice squad Monday without passing through waivers.
Edmunds, the older brother of Steelers safety Terrell Edmunds, had six tackles and an interception on a fake punt last season for the Steelers. He also rushed for 92 yards on 22 carries. He also can line up and play some fullback, which would give the Steelers the option of using him in that role since Watt is the only true fullback on the team's roster.
Watt is dealing with a hamstring injury, but is expected to return next week when the Steelers host the Browns. Allen, who was switched from safety to linebacker this season, has a foot injury that could keep him out several weeks.
