Jets release Bell after Twitter flap

Le'Veon Bell is a free agent.

The Jets released the ex-Steelers running back from his contract on Tuesday night, with New York general manager Joe Douglas saying the move was "in the interests of both parties":

Bell had a guaranteed $6 million remaining on his 2020 salary.

Bell made clear his unhappiness with his role and head coach Adam Gase over course of this season.

Back in training camp, Gase said Bell was pulled from a scrimmage due to "hamstring tightness," which Bell later disputed, saying there was "nothing wrong" with his hamstrings. He followed up with a series of tweets:

The latest incidents came on Sunday after the Jets' 30-10 loss to the Cardinals, a game in which Bell received only one target, and rushed the ball 13 times for 60 yards. Bell liked a number of tweets from fans after the loss that suggested Bell should have had a bigger role in the game:

Gase was asked about Bell's likes on Monday.

"Sometimes the defense takes away a guy that we're trying to give the ball to," Gase said. "I get it. Players get frustrated when they feel they should either be targeted more or get more touches. I think there's a lot of guys feeling that way. Just got to go back to work and figure out a way to get out guys involved. I hate that's the route we go with all this instead of just talking to me about it, but seems this is the way guys want to do it nowadays."
