With wide receiver Diontae Johnson out for Sunday's game at Heinz Field against the Browns, the Steelers on Saturday activated Deon Cain from their practice squad.
Cain, 24, was initially drafted in the sixth round by the Colts in 2018 and appeared in seven games, starting three, for the Colts in 2019. But Indianapolis placed him on its practice squad and he was signed by the Steelers when they released Donte Moncrief.
Cain appeared in the Steelers' final six games last season, starting three, finishing with five catches for 72 yards. All told, he had nine receptions for 124 yards last season.
But Cain got pushed down the roster this season with the additions of second-round draft pick Chase Claypool and free agent Ray-Ray McCloud when the Steelers chose to keep five, not six, receivers on their active roster.
Odell Beckham, who sat out practice Thursday and Friday for Cleveland, was cleared to play on Sunday after testing negative for COVID-19 for the third straight day on Saturday.
Johnson will miss Sunday's game with a back injury, but is expected to be available moving forward.
