You can never have too much goalie depth.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed goaltender Shane Starrett to an AHL contract for the 2020-21 season, the team announced on Tuesday.
Starrett, 26, was the backup for the AHL's Bakersfield Condors last season, recording a 3.63 goals-against average and an .874 save percentage. He was the Condors' starter in the prior season, posting a 2.33 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. He was named to the AHL's All-Rookie Team and Second All-Star Team. He made his professional debut in the 2017-18 season in the ECHL with the Wichita Thunder, and played in the league's All-Star Game.
Starrett, 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds, played two seasons of NCAA hockey with the Air Force Academy before turning pro. His team won the AHA championship in his second season there, and he was named tournament MVP.
With the goaltending depth in the system, Starrett looks to be penciled in for a start with Wheeling. Maxime Lagace, Emil Larmi, and Alex D'Orio are all on NHL contracts, and could potentially all start the season with Wilkes-Barre. Wheeling usually has at least one goaltender who is AHL-contracted or NHL-contracted, so Starrett would fill that role.
