Dustin Colquitt's time with the Steelers wasn't nearly as good with the team as that of his father.
The son of former Steelers punter Craig Colquitt, who was signed in the offseason, was released by the team on Friday as it finished up preparations for its game Sunday in Tennessee against the Titans.
Colquitt, who had spent his previous 15 seasons with the Chiefs, was averaging just 43.1 yards per punt and was dead last in the NFL in net average at 37.2 yards.
He was signed during training camp as a move meant to save about $1.2 million against the 2020 salary cap when veteran Jordan Berry was released. The Steelers brought Berry in for a workout earlier this week and are expected to re-sign him according to ESPN's Field Yates..
What is not known at this time is if the Steelers (5-0) will be permitted to use him against the Titans (5-0) Sunday. Outside free agents must pass COVID tests for five consecutive days before they are permitted to join their respective team.
The Steelers could have set up Berry, who had been their punter since 2015, to come to their facility for COVID-19 testing the past five days before officially signing him if that would pass NFL rules.
If that's not the case, it means the Steelers will elevate rookie Corliss Waitman, a South Alabama product from their practice squad on Saturday. Due to COVID-19 rules, the Steelers would not be permitted to bring in an outside punter without first having him test negative for the coronavirus for five consecutive days.
Waitman averaged 42.7 yards per kick in his college career but has shown a strong leg in practice.
In addition to making the move at punter, the Steelers also placed linebacker Devin Bush on injured reserve. Defensive lineman Henry Mondeaux was elevated from the practice squad to take his place.
Mondeaux, a former Oregon star, initially signed with the Saints as a rookie free agent in 2018. He joined the Steelers in 2019 and had been on the team's practice squad since.
To replace Mondeaux on the practice squad, the Steelers signed linebacker Ray Wilborn. Wilborn, a Ball State product, had been in training camp with the Falcons.
The Steelers also ruled cornerback Mike Hilton (shoulder) and fullback Derek Watt (hamstring) out for the game against the Titans. The team is expected to return guard David DeCastro and wide receiver Diontae Johnson for the game.
Both had missed last week's 38-7 win over the Browns because of injury.
The Titans report no players as being out for Sunday's game, though they did lose starting left tackle Taylor Lewan to a torn ACL in their overtime win last week over the Texans.
