The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins celebrate a win in the 2019-20 season.

The AHL's target start date for the 2020-21 season has been pushed back to Feb. 5, league president and CEO Scott Howson announced on Wednesday.

The date was approved by the league's board of governors.

The AHL was previously targeting a Dec. 4 start date.

No further details regarding next season have been determined, and the league says that it continues to monitor developments in the cities of its 31 teams.

The NHL's official target date remains Jan. 1, although Golden Knights owner Bill Foley said recently that he believes a Feb. 1 start is more likely.

The ECHL is staggering its start, with 13 teams (including the Nailers) beginning play on Dec. 11, and the remaining participating teams beginning on Jan. 15.
