The Penguins' roster seems to be pretty well set, at until training camp gets underway sometime this winter, but the offseason changes haven't been limited to trades and free-agent signings.
Jim Rutherford, who has been contemplating adjustments to the Hockey Operations department since last season ended, surprised people inside and outside the organization Monday when he fired assistant GM Jason Karmanos, a protege and someone Rutherford had brought in shortly after he was hired to replace Ray Shero in 2014.
A few hours later, the Penguins announced that former defenseman Trevor Daley was being brought in as an advisor to Hockey Ops, and Rutherford subsequently confirmed that he plans to hire at least one assistant GM.
