Heyward full participant at practice, Gilbert to IR taken on the South Side (Steelers)

So much for worrying about the status of Cam Heyward.

The Steelers listed the All-Pro defensive tackle on their injury report for Wednesday as a full participant as they began preparation for their game Sunday in Dallas against the Cowboys.

"I'm fine," Heyward said Wednesday morning before practice. "The leg's fine."

Heyward, who left last Sunday's 28-24 win over the Ravens late in the fourth quarter with a quad injury, said earlier in the day he was feeling better every day and then proved that by practicing fully later in the day.

The Steelers also activated offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski from the injured reserve list. Inside linebacker Ulysees Gilbert was placed on injured reserve with a back injury to make room for Wisniewski on the 53-man roster.

Wisniewski, signed as a free agent in the offseason from the Chiefs, started the Steelers' regular season opener in place of injured right guard David DeCastro against the Giants. But Wisniewski suffered a pectoral muscle injury in that game and had been on IR since.

His return bolsters the offensive line depth for the Steelers (7-0), who travel to Dallas to face the Cowboys (2-6) this week.

Gilbert missed the second half of his rookie season with a back injury in 2019. He was thrust into a more prominent role after the Steelers lost Devin Bush for the season to a torn ACL, but suffered another back injury three weeks ago in a win over the Browns.

Wisniewski, did not officially practice on Wednesday.

Cornerback Mike Hilton (shoulder) was limited, as was defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs (ankle). Nose tackle Tyson Alualu (knee) also did not practice.

Safety Jordan Dangerfield (quad) was a full participant. Fullback Derek Watt, who has missed two of the past four games with a hamstring injury, was not listed on the injury report.

For the Cowboys, running back Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) was limited in practice on Wednesday, as was defensive end Aldon Smith (knee). Punter Chris Jones (abdomen) did not practice.

Earlier in the day, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy also said that either Garrett Gilbert or Cooper Rush will make their first career start at quarterback against the Steelers. Starter Dak Prescott is out for the season with a broken ankle and backup Andy Dalton is on the Reserve/COVID List. Rookie Ben DiNucci started the Cowboys' 23-9 loss to the Eagles in place of Dalton last week.
